  • What counts as an algebra credit?

An algebra credit is obtained by having a passing grade in one of the following: High School - Algebra 1, Trans Math 1 & 2, Tech Math 1 & 2, or Applied Math 1 & 2. College - MTH 100 or higher. Unless specifically stated on GED completion forms, the credit given for math does NOT constitute an algebra credit.

  • What if I don't have an algebra credit?

If you do not have a credit in algebra, you can remedy this by enrolling in a class at a local community college, college or trade school. If you neither have the time nor resources to take a class, the NJATC provides an online Tech Math course for a minimal fee. After completion of the course (which may take up to four months to complete) you will be sent a certificate that satisfies the algebra requirement for electrical apprenticeship. We will then make a copy of it and add it to your file. To find out more about the NJATC's online Tech Math Course, click here.

  • I can't find my diploma and my high school can't issue me another one, what can I do?

If you absolutely cannot obtain a copy of your diploma, we require that the date of your graduation appears on an official high school transcript.  Official transcripts have to be in a sealed envelope and the transcript itself needs to be marked OFFICIAL and bear a seal or be notarized.

  • What does the aptitude test consist of?

Our aptitude tests are developed by the American Institutes for Research (AIR) and incorporate two sections; Algebra and Reading Comprehension.  This test is based on a stanine scale and we require a score of 4 or better.  The Algebra portion involves both standard calculations and word problems.  Reading Comprehension involves reading written passages and answering questions after each passage.  These tests are timed, so it is important not to spend too much time on any one question.

  • Is there anything I can do to prepare for the aptitude test?

It is recommended that you "brush up" on Algebra 1 from beginning to end as this will help tremendously and being able to remember what you've read and answering questions without reading it again, will also help.  You can click HERE to take a practice exam.
